16:40.11.30.08.sun - Anyone looking to get tattooed?
|
Ok fokkers- if anyone has been hesitating on a tattoo, the next week or two is a good time to jump on it... here's why!
My buddy Mez from Colorado is doing a guest spot at Justin's shop, Lost City Tattoo. She still has a few evening appointments left open, and does absolutely amazing work - my favorites are her portraits, her pinups, and her flowers -- I'll be getting a zombie pin up for sures while she's in town. =)
She is here from the 5th through the 12th, and her prices are more than reasonable for the quality of the work. =) If you're interested, or have been putting off getting some work done, jump on it so she gets to do a ton of work while she's in town! Click the image to check out her portfolio, and e-mail her at the address on the image below if you want to set up an appointment - let her know you're a friend of mine and she'll make sure to punch you in the throat, too!

i will keep this more abbreviated, as i had no idea how long that last fscking post was. definitely earned a few "tl;dr" tags, i'm sure.
-burgers at two bells tavern are awesome. -dave the bartender at two bells tavern, even more awesome. -mirror pond ale on tap, awesome the triplet.
-ozomatli was not what i expected but still way rad. ton of fun live. glad i went. chali 2na kicked ass.
-oral board interviews today were less scary than i thought, but about as awkward as expected. i did well, i go in for 2 hours of background questions and interrogation tomorrow, and assuming that doesn't go badly, i should hear favorable information such as an offer of employment hopefully in about 3-5 months.
-i need to find a way to have fresh doughnuts from top pot delivered to the east coast.
-i bought 2 pounds of pasta. half pound each of: dark chocolate fettucini, chipotle fettucini, orange szechuan fettucini, and thai ginger fettucini. i can't wait to bring em home and eat em. i want to boil up the dark chocolate fettucini and then put it in the fridge and serve it with half melted vanilla ice cream and butterscotch. dessert pasta!
-i <3 anne and levan. they have a place for me to live while i'm in academy and looking for a place out here!
-pho is the best shit ever. i have never eaten as much food that was as spicy and as delicious for as little money as my first time eating pho. if you don't know what it is, google it. someone on long island better let me know where i can get pho, or i'm going to be accosting vietnamese grandmothers and threatening them with bodily harm if they won't make me pho.
-yes, a third trip back to the two bells tavern. i could easily make that my local watering hole. great bartender, great beer, great vibe, great food. love it.
-tonight, i plan to chillax in the hotel room and play video games and or watch movies.
-tomorrow looks like interviewing, then some time to kill, then dinner at an ethiopian joint with anne and levan, then off to the plane. i don't want to leave. :( even just bumming around mostly by myself i adore it here! almost no rain today except a few minutes of drizzle, even if it was mostly gray.
ok, that's a bit shorter than my last novel. fleece out, sheeples.
current mood: chipper

18:59.11.8.08.sat - Seattle update!
|
Soooo I got here on Thursday, found my hotel, and wandered out for lunch - ended up finding Two Bells Tavern - holy awesome sausage sandwich. Buncha good local microbrews on tap, though I abstained since I still had to be ready for the physical tests on Saturday. The bartender was a cool cat and turns out he's from Patchogue. I meet more New Yorkers in Seattle than I do on Long Island, I swear. The place is very comfy, if I was local, I can see it being a great spot to go have a few beers and bar food with minimal crowding and headache.
Back to the hotel for some laziness and research about dinner and nightlife. I settled on some good local thai food at Buddha Belltown ( http://www.buddhabelltown.com/ ), which was pretty good. I'd steer clear of the soup, the Tom Yum was sorta bland, but the Mongoloan Beef was delish. Another cool bartender, really cool little space. Comfy. I'd go back!
From there it was on to Noc Noc ( www.clubnocnoc.com ) for Thursday's main event, the Sinner Saint Burlesque Revue ( http://www.sinnersaintburlesque.com/ ). Let me preface this by saying that I've never been to burlesque before, and man, it was about 10x more fun than I had expected. I knew the general idea of a burlesque show, you know, half naked chicks and what have you, which clearly, I'm a fan of. But the entire show was a metric fuckton of fun. The MC was a riot and sang old Sinatra and rat pack tracks between the performers. The performances were hysterical, ranging from a spry little blond doing crazy acrobatic strip tease in a hoop suspended from the ceiling, to a girl dressed up as a flower shedding her outfit one petal at a time, and closed with someone donning a pig nose and ears and performing to a Miss Piggy song. She even had a curly tail on the back of her boyshorts, and the finish left had someone run onstage and stuff an apple in her mouth- she crwaled off on all fours.
Definitely was a blast, and I need to get out and see more burlesque shows. Big fan!
From there, a 6 block or so jaunt back to my hotel, and nappytime.
Friday morning I hit up the absolutely most amazing doughtnut joint on earth, which is approximately 200 feet from the door to my hotel - www.toppotdoughnuts.com . The chai was weak, but if you're paying attention to anything aside from the fucking AWESOME doughnuts, you're a douchebag. I had 2 glazed old fashions and will definitely be heading there tomorrow morning for more.
After that, I wandered through Pike Street Public Market. I go over there and wander around every trip here, and it really doesn't get old. There's always some awesome shit to dig up. I need to make a stop there before leaving, as there's some stuff I'd like to bring home - can you say chipotle pepper pastas? Another stall had awesome digitally modified photo prints of seattle stuff, which I may grab if the price isn't ridiculous.
From there off to the Noodle Ranch. Out here, the 'pan-asian' cuisine thing is huge, apparently... places putting out chinese, japanese, thai, etc dishes all on the same menu. Mighty good noodles, I must say... I got the Singapore noodles... the best description I have really is a sort of asian alfredo sauce. Soba noodles in a cocount / peanut / curry sauce with chicken and mushroom and bok choy. Mad good. The pork gyoza rocked too. Also really cozy.
Yeah, I've been eating my ass off out here, and loving it.
From there, back to the hotel again to be lazy and research the evening. I found out that there's a bar around here that has karaoke 7 days a week, has the stiffest drinks going, and, of course, since it's karaoke all the time and a dive bar of pure alcoholic entertainment, is a gay bar. The Crescent Lounge.
I walked by and stopped in, grabbed a coke, and eyeballed the place. It was early, maybe 6:45? Mostly empty but the few people inside were entertainingly raucuous and way inebriated. I can definitely see it being ridiculously awesome for karaoke.
I did some more walking, from Olive down to Pike, patrolled Pike and checked out some stores, passed by the Elysian ( http://www.elysianbrewing.com/ ) - if you're ever out here and like brewpubs, definitely get to the Elysian. Again, I passed on boozing it up since I still had the physical tests for SPD to contend with, but maybe I'll get back over there tonight or tomorrow. :)
Next stop was Amante's ( http://www.amantepizzaandpasta.com/ ) which was an awesome local chain pizza / pasta joint. Good minestrone, good garlic bread, and they even special ordered me up a bowl of penne pesto. Great service, good food. Not as comfy as the smaller places, but cheap and filling.
I couldn't find any other interesting fare for the evening, as karaoke at The Crescent still wasn't kicking by the time I finished my pasta... so I trucked back towards the hotel and down to the Pacific Place mall, and saw Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Good movie, I laughed my ass off, but the obligatory 'romantic lovey dovey' crap in the last 15 minutes could really take a fucking hike, please. From there, back to the hotel and bed.
Today, I got my ass out of bed and went over to Seattle Bagel Bakery. Now, we NY folk are stuck up as fuck about our bagels. You can't get a real fucking bagel outside the tri-state area, except maybe in Florida. Now, with that said, Seattle Bagel Bakery was not the best bagel I've had - but it was definitely good enough for me to think I was in NY having a bagel. If that's not praise for a bagel joint.. I don't know what is.
Back to the hotel, yet again, to relax for a few, then off to the Washington State CJ Academy for the police entry physical ability testing. Last time I was here, I was sick, and while I made it through 3/4 events, I missed the mile and a half run by 3 fucking seconds, clocking it at 14:46 or so. Today, I killed the other 3 events with no issues, and then destroyed the mile and a half in 12:46 - 2 minutes better is a hella difference.
Tonight I'm meeting up with my high school buddy Anne Kelly and her man Levan, both of whom are made of 100% pure distilled awesome, and going to see Ozomatli play at Showbox over on 1st and Pike. While I do have interviews at 11am, they are thankfully a few blocks from my hotel, so tonight I can actually have a few beers. :)
That summarizes shit out here so far! It's been mostly rainy, but today for my run and all it's been 65 degrees and sunny. If that holds out I may see about renting a motorcycle tomorrow after my interviews and ridin' for a while. Fingers crossed.
I go tomorrow morning for my oral board interviews, and Monday for a personal history questionnaire, polygraph, psych profile etc. So far, so good - wish me luck, bitches.
Till later....

11:30.12.28.07.fri - My Penis Is A Mountain.
|
A British singer's mispronunciation of the Croatian national anthem -- he sang "my penis is a mountain" -- may have helped Croatia top England in a soccer game.
London-born opera singer Tony Henry Wednesday at the Wembley stadium in London mispronounced the Croatian words and sang "my penis is a mountain," instead of the proper translation "we love your mountains," Britain's Telegraph said Friday.
As Henry sang the anthem, some Croatian players smiled when they heard the wrong pronunciation.
